Ecology & Vocal Performance

Why did you choose to attend UGA?
I decided to attend UGA when I saw the curriculum for the Ecology major; it aligned perfectly with my professional interests and really got me excited to be an ecologist. Being able to use the Zell Miller scholarship and being close to home were also pretty big factors playing into my decision.
What is your most memorable UGA experience or memory?
My most memorable UGA experience was touring and competing in Europe this past summer with the UGA Hodgson Singers, UGA's top choir. We went to Prague, Salzburg, Baden, and Vienna and performed in the most amazing places: cathedrals, palace chapels, etc. It was an exceptionally emotional and spiritual trip for everyone involved and getting to share that with approximately 50 of my closest friends made an experience to never forget.
What is your favorite campus setting and why?
I love the setting right outside the Ecology building by the turtle pond. Especially in the spring in fall when it's a little cooler, it's nice to sit on the low stone wall and take a breather.
What student organizations are you involved in?
I am currently involved in three singing groups: The UGA Hodgson Singer and Collegium Musicum, which are both official UGA choirs and the Ecotones, a co-ed a cappella group based out of the school of Ecology. I am also involved in the UGACDA, a chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.
What are your career plans/aspirations?
I hope to become a conservation ecologist, primarily working with government or non-profit organizations to help save endangered species. In that field I want to meld my field work and husbandry efforts with my skills in the visual arts and help the advertising and promotion of the conservation of endangered species.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I will have a Masters degree in Ecology, or a related field, and be working for the amphibian conservation organization Amphibian Ark, or similar organization. I also firmly believe that, even five years from now, I'll be able to maintain my strong interest in music and singing. Whether I'm in a professional or community choir or in a garage band, I know music will always have a strong presence in my life.
How will you make a positive difference in the world?
From a conservation standpoint, I believe that helping to protect the species of the world that are endangered, especially due to human actions, will better the world wide ecosystem and help humans to become better connected with the planet. I believe only good can come of that. From a musical perspective, I think bringing art to a community is immensely important. Music is a wonderful thing in that it helps people to communicate with others and with their own emotions. It fosters togetherness.
What message would you like to send to alumni and friends who support UGA financially?
Thank you for helping this school to maintain its standard of excellence that allows students, such as myself, to have eye opening educational and life experiences!
Names of scholarship awards you have received?
Zell Miller Scholarship, Avon Garden Scholarship, Garden Club of Georgia
What has your scholarship meant or enabled you to do?
These scholarships have been essential in offsetting the cost of my education so that when I graduate, I graduate debt free. They've also helped me to fund UGA related summer travels etc., which has helped me to have a unique and engaging college experience.
