Getting to Know 2026 Teresa Harris Guthrie Award Winner Ethan Cone
The 2026 Teresa Harris Guthrie Award was presented in March 2026 to Ethan Cone, a fourth-year student from Elberton, Georgia, double majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Spanish. We caught up with Ethan to learn a bit more about this outstanding UGA student.
What is your role as a Division of Development and Alumni Relations student employee?
I currently work with the Career Center as the lead career development intern. I primarily provide one-on-one support to students across different majors, background and career stages during drop-in hours. I also give presentations across campus and facilitate webinars for the Arch Ready Professional Certificate, in addition to leading five fellow interns.
How did you learn about this position and why did you decide to apply?
I found out about this position while searching for on-campus job opportunities on Handshake. I first discovered my passion for peer mentorship through my work as a resident assistant, and the career development intern position was a phenomenal opportunity to continue offering specialized support for students and network with other students, faculty and staff who share my passion for helping students realize their full potential.
What has your position taught you and/or how has it prepared you for the future?
This position has prepared me for my future in higher education by empowering me to take on initiatives that fill gaps in student services. Over the course of my time in this internship, I have planned and executed two capstone projects to address the needs of specific student populations. Completing these projects sharpened my professional communication skills and taught me how to effectively collaborate.
What is one surprising thing you learned about UGA, DAR or the Career Center?
One surprising thing I learned about the Career Center is what a close-knit community the office is. Everyone genuinely cares about one another’s success and wellbeing. Every aspect of our work, from casual conversation to executing large projects and events, is so fulfilling because of our community-oriented work culture.
What has been most rewarding about your role?
Being able to offer individual guidance to students has been the most rewarding aspect of my role. I look forward to coming to work every day because I know I can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation, I will be pursing my masters in College Student Affairs Administration and continuing my work at the Career Center as a graduate assistant in career services.
What would you say to those who donated to this fund in Teresa’s honor?
Thank you for highlighting the incredible contributions of student workers in DAR. This award inspires student workers to become exceptional leaders in the workplace and invest in the UGA community.
Many thanks to the generous donors who continue Teresa’s legacy by donating to the Teresa Harris Guthrie Memorial Fund.
