Deferred Donor Recognition Preferences

In stewarding a deferred gift donor, there is nothing of greater importance than ensuring that a donor’s recognition preferences are honored. Accordingly, this document serves to clarify the various recognition options available to a planned giving donor and summarizes the method for capturing this data in GAIL.

Recognition Preferences – The Options:

When donors complete the Statement of Future Gifts to document their deferred gift, they will automatically be enrolled as a member of the Heritage Society.  However, they will have the ability to select one of the below options:

1. The University has permission to publish my/our name(s) and gift amount.

2. The University has permission to publish my/our name(s) only; I/we request that the gift amount remain confidential.

3. Please do not publish my/our name(s) or gift amount; I/we wish to remain anonymous.

Understanding the Data in GAIL:

Full Recognition:

If donor selects option 1 above, the donor will be coded in GAIL as follows:

First, under the planned gift screen, next to “Anonymous gift,” “No” will be selected.

Second, under the planned gift attributes, a “planned giving recognition” attribute with a value of “full recognition” will exist.

When a list of your college/school/area’s planned giving donors is being pulled for annual Honor Roll or any other listing or publication (newsletters, press releases, cumulative giving societies, etc.), please be sure to build your query so that you can distinguish between donors that are comfortable with full recognition, donors that request anonymity of amount only, and donors that prefer anonymity of identity and amount. This will allow your college, school, or unit to ensure that you are properly respecting your donors’ recognition preferences. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Office of Gift and Estate Planning at 706-542-8140.
