GDPR Changes Start May 25, 2018

The GAIL constituents making up our alumni and friends within the European Union are seeing some changes due to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). UGA’s statement on GDPR makes some great points around our compliance policy. It is important to note that all EU alumni and friends’ communications preferences are tracked in GAIL; therefore, any communication list should be pulled from GAIL utilizing individual preferences as well as the standard system exclusions*. This policy has new bearing because of changes in the EU with GDPR and has always been true for the U.S.-based CAN-SPAM Act, and State Solicitation Laws.  Basically, it is increasingly important to ensure every GAIL user is aware of these regulations and adheres to the business processes* used to ensure UGA’s compliance.

*i.e., use the standard solicit code exclusions through GAIL for marketing, events, and all communications to alumni and friends

The scope of our EU alumni in GAIL are:

  • 1,601 individuals
    • 356 in UK (may not be an issue with “Brexit”)
  • 624 have email addresses
    • 438 of these are alumni

In addition, all DAR websites have been amended to accurately point to the GDPR Compliance Policy.
