The China Maymester Study Abroad Program offers students the opportunity not only to see China but to be in China. Students participate in social events with ordinary Chinese citizens, meet government and Communist Party officials, organize social activities with Chinese students, attend special lectures by Chinese faculty, and sample the wide range of Chinese cooking at the restaurants locals frequent. Students visit four cities: Beijing, the country’s capital and home to some of the most famous cultural attractions in the world; Xi’an, the country’s capital over 2000 years ago and site of the Terracotta Warriors; Yan’an, the base for the communist revolutionaries where we enter the caves occupied by Mao Zedong and other leaders who changed the course of history; and Shanghai, China’s super-modern commercial center and its most European city.
