The community literacy partnership between the College of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy Education and the Parkview Community Center fosters strong community connections and a robust community center in the affordable housing complexes of Parkview and in the future of Parkview Extension.
The intention is to build dynamic partnerships between Parkview communities and the University of Georgia through service-learning courses and internships focused on the arts and tutoring and academic programs that support UGA students and faculty.
The College of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Athens Housing Authority that allows us to use the Parkview Community Center as a hub for meetings, events, and programs that benefit—first and foremost—the residents of the affordable housing complex.
With several events and programs already scheduled to take place at the Center, we need funding to help support our initiative.
What do we need?
• Funding to support graduate students overseeing this program, in hopes of making UGA a national hub for community-based educational research with youth.
• Funding for Teaching Artists – community artists and UGA graduates who can provide literacy programming in the space.
• Funding for ongoing programmatic needs (ie: supplies, etc.)
Other in-kind donations are welcome to help the attendees feel comfortable in the space (bean bag chairs, art supplies, books, etc.)
