For two weeks, we are asking our community of alumni and friends to join together and make an impact. With your support we can reach our goal of 50 gifts to provide dynamic professional development opportunities and remove barriers for Child Life students!

Every year thousands of children and adolescents are diagnosed with medical issues and have to learn how to adjust to a ‘new normal’. These patients and their families need support and advocates to help them navigate through their difficult circumstances. Here at the College of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS), we prepare future certified Child Life Specialists to become the heroes these families need.

The FACS Child Life Specialist program teaches our students how to help children and their families cope with the stress and uncertainty of illness, trauma, disability, loss and bereavement. They are equipped to support a child’s social-emotional needs in any healthcare setting thanks to world class faculty and professional development opportunities at the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Your gift, no matter the size, directly supports Child Life students and will impact children in our community, our state, and our nation for many years to come. And thanks to the generosity of one of our alumni donors, we are now able to TRIPLE the impact of your gift!

In 2018, child life interns spent an average of $660 – $1080 on fees for internship applications, assessments, and internship travel. These were incurred fees on top of tuition and living expenses. Due to the heavy time commitment required by child life internships, many students choose not to work during their internship and instead rely upon savings or students loans to cover the various costs associated with their internship.

Students should never be faced with the difficult decision of using their limited finances to pay for their experiential learning opportunities versus staying on their career path—which is why the Dr. Charlotte (Charlie) Wallinga Child Life Program Student Support Fund was created. This endowment will provide ongoing support to enhance the training of child life students at the FACS.
