About #GivingTuesday: We know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but did you know Dec. 2 is #GivingTuesday?  This global day of philanthropy is a simple, yet effective movement to encourage families, companies, and communities to celebrate generosity and give. As UGA friends, parents and alumni, today is a great day to show your support to this great institution.  Make a gift to UGA today in support of academic excellence, world-class research and, public service and outreach.

Thanks to the extraordinary impact of private giving to the University of Georgia, students like these have extraordinary learning experiences.

Hannah Boyd ’17

“Your generosity and humble heart fuel this university.”

Major: Genetics
Hometown: Effingham County

What do you love about UGA? Campus is amazing. You can see pride everywhere.

How have scholarships impacted you? When I was 13, my dad passed away from cancer, and my mom became the sole financial provider. I knew that if I wanted to go to college, I had to push myself academically to be in position to earn scholarships… Scholarships definitely made this possible. I wouldn’t be here without it.

What do you want to do after college? I want to be a genetic counselor at a children’s healthcare facility.

 Colby Ruiz ’15

“The scholarships I received have opened doors for me in ways that I never expected.”

Major: Biological Sciences
Hometown: Valdosta

Why did you choose UGA? In my opinion, UGA is the best education for aspiring scientists, whether pre-med or interested in research, in the United States. Secondly, for a university to have the type of education, with resources and research opportunities UGA that has, along with its cost, UGA is available for so many students at an unbeatable deal.

How have scholarships impacted you? The money I received from private support has eliminated my need to work while at UGA. It has allowed me to devote more time and attention to my grades, my research, and enjoying the college experience.  Without private support, I can confidently say I wouldn’t be as academically successful as I have been.  Scholarships are helping me pay for school, and also alleviating some of my parents’ burden, which will help my siblings in the future.

What do you want to do after college? My plan is go to medical school and my ultimate goal is to return to south Georgia or a rural community in Georgia as a practicing physician.

Wanyi Jiang ’18

“I’ve become the first generation in my family to attend college thanks to scholarships.”

Major: International Affairs and Economics/International Business
Hometown: Woodstock

What is your favorite thing about UGA? UGA is a place where I can pursue my passions. I love music, and even though it’s not what I want to do as a career, I can continue to pursue it. Also, UGA’s SPIA and Terry College of Business provide great experiences and learning opportunities. My favorite thing is being in the Redcoat Band–game day is definitely an experience. I love running onto Sanford Stadium and cheering on the Dawgs.

How have scholarships impacted you?  I received two scholarships from UGA. When I was younger my family moved to the U.S. from China. I was worried about paying for college because my family didn’t have a lot of money. Even though my mom told me she would try to save money for me to go to college, I knew it was going to be an issue. With the scholarships I’ve received I’ve been able to pay for college and not put that burden on my parents. When I came to the U.S., I was a first generation immigrant. In band, I am first chair. Now, I am the first generation to go to college thanks to scholarships.

What do you want to do after college?  I know I want to go to graduate school so that I can work for an international company.

Charles Orgbon III ’17

“Scholarship support means that I can focus on my studies and not how I’ll pay for college.”

Major: Environmental Economics and Management
Hometown: Dacula

Why did you choose UGA? The privilege of going to a large public university offers a lot of opportunities. I have moments where I think, “this is my school, and this is amazing…” Through UGA’s environmental economics and management programs, I’m able to marry my interests to a career path that will help people understand their connection to our planet. In 2008, I started an environmental organization, Greening Forward, to help young people take action against environmental issues in communities. We fund and empower young people to identify environmental projects to help keep our air, water and land clean. Since 2008, Greening Forward has provided $58,000 in grants to youth-driven initiatives and is currently planning our third international young environmentalist youth summit in New York City.

How have scholarships impacted you? I was named a Presidential Leadership Scholar and Black Alumni Scholarship Recipient upon entering the University of Georgia…With the rising cost of education, more now so than ever before, donors’ contributions to the University of Georgia are important to making sure that we have the best education. UGA offers the residents of Georgia and others who want to study here an exceptional education.

Drew Jacoby ’15

“Scholarship support has helped me focus on college and go after things I’ve always wanted.”

Major: Political Science
Hometown: Athens

What do you love about UGA? I am most thankful for all of the people I’ve been able to meet during my time here… It has changed my life and been a wonderful experience. As UGA’s SGA President, I am behind the scenes working to be a part of positive change and represent the student body. This is a university where anything can happen. Students are chasing their dreams and one thing that unites us is the four years spent at this university. At the end of the day, it becomes home for everyone.

How have scholarships impacted you? Before coming to college, one of my biggest fears wasn’t necessarily getting into college, it was being able to afford college. I come from a low-income background—I am a Pell Grant recipient. Because of UGA’s financial aid office’s help and scholarship support, my worries have been answered.

What do you want to do after college? If I could do anything next year, I would just move to Washington D.C., to be part of the political change that is going on right now. We just had our midterm election, so it is going to be interesting. I’d like to be a part of politics and hopefully be an advocate for positive change not only in education, but also in international and foreign affairs.
