As hospitals around the country face shortages of personal protective equipment, UGA faculty and staff across campus are collaborating to address this problem.

Face shields produced by the College of Engineering, and the Instrument Design and Fabrication Shop, and UGA Libraries include four simple parts that hospitals can assemble quickly: a clear plastic shield, a plastic headband, an adjustable strap made from non-latex rubber, and a neoprene strip as a forehead cushion. The shields protect health care providers from droplets, aerosols and other contaminants while treating patients. UGA Libraries is using an innovative method, 3D printing, to fabricate the plastic headband for the face shield. Partners from Entrepreneurship, Textiles, and Innovation Gateway loaned their 3D printers to the Science Library Makerspace as to produce more headbands.

UGA can currently produce more than 80-100 face shields per week, but more is possible.

Here’s how your donation helps:

  • $50 purchases a spool of filament – the material used to 3D print the headband – each spool creates 20 shields.
  • Every $2000 purchases a MakerBot + 3D printer, which will contribute immediately to the production of headbands for  face shields, and after, be used by UGA students and faculty for their academic and research needs.

UGA is working together to produce thousands of face shields for hospitals, so UGA Libraries is seeking to purchase additional 3D printers and filament to increase production. Printing materials are also quickly depleting, and more filament spools are needed to continue production.

Please convey our extreme gratitude to UGA for their creation and donation of the face shields. Thanks for all that you’re doing. We on the front-lines appreciate it tremendously!  -Intensive Care Manager, Piedmont Athens Regional
