The Founders Memorial Garden needs your help! Donate to the Founders Memorial Garden Support Fund and help revitalize a campus gem.

Nestled between Lumpkin Street and UGA’s historic North Campus is the Founders Memorial Garden, a cherished 2.5-acre public garden. Designed by noteworthy UGA faculty and developed in partnership with the Garden Club of Georgia, the garden has served as a place of respite, inspiration and education since 1939. While the garden is a piece of living history in the heart of campus filled with stories and memories, it also serves a special mission – to educate students about the use of plant materials to design outdoor spaces.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors enjoy the garden each day at no cost. And, although the buildings and grounds have been well-maintained by the College of Environment and Design, the beloved garden is beginning to show its age and needs rejuvenation. This is why we need your help – the Founders Memorial Garden relies on private financial support to cover upkeep and refurbishment expenses!

On March 15, the CED announced a fundraising campaign to support the revitalization of the Founders Memorial Garden. Thanks to the generosity of CED friends and alumni, we surpassed our initial goal of $5,000 in less than 24 hours!

There is more work to be done and, with your continued support, we can further restore this campus gem for students, faculty, staff and visitors to enjoy for years to come! With our current funding, we can bring new life to the Serpentine and Boxwood Gardens. Reaching our next fundraising goal of $17,500 will also enable refurbishment projects to begin on the Camellia Walk Arbor, the Boxwood Parterre Garden pavers, the North Arboretum Azaleas, and other areas that need rejuvenation.

The Founders Memorial Garden holds a special place in the heart of many and we are grateful for your support!

FUNDING PRIORITIES:

The Serpentine Garden is perhaps one of the Founders Memorial Garden’s most beloved spaces. It has been the site of countless weddings and other special events, and currently has the highest need for plant replacement.  Your gift to the Founders Memorial Garden Support Fund will help purchase flowering perennial plants, colorful flowering bulbs and structural shrubs to bring life back to this space with traditional favorites as well as new varieties. The estimated cost for this rejuvenation is $5,000. For example,

  • $30 will fund the purchase of a set of three perennials with robust root systems (plant groupings in odd-numbered quantities are best).
  • $50 will fund the purchase of 50 healthy bulbs (such as daffodils) that will bring color and life to the garden when the skies are gray.
  • $100 will fund the purchase of a pair of sturdy shrubs to add architecture and framing to the garden.
  • $200 will fund the purchase of an entire swath of herbaceous beauties!

The Boxwood Garden is another special garden room built in concert with the Peachtree Garden Club in 1941.  Unfortunately, this area has struggled for decades with loss of individual plants due to disease. An additional $5,000 will enable purchasing quality Boxwood cultivars resistant to Boxwood Blight, as well as replacement soil, for garden revitalization.  For example,

  • $50 will fund the purchase of 3 replacement shrubs that are resistant to Boxwood Blight.
  • $200 will fund the replacement of quality soil under 3 replacement boxwood shrubs
  • $500 will fund the refurbishment of one of the parterre designs—the peach, cotton boll, watermelon or Cherokee Rose seed symbols!

ADDITIONAL FUNDING NEEDS:

  • The beloved Camellia Walk Arbor is showing its age and needs repairs to improve its structural integrity. Your gift will purchase wood for these repairs, along with flowering vines to cascade over the Arbor.
    • Estimated cost: $3,000
  • While the Boxwood Parterre Garden pavers are in moderately good condition, funds are needed for maintenance, which will increase safety and accessibility of the garden. Your gift will support replacement of bulging or uneven portions of brick pavement.
    • Estimated cost: $2,500
  • The North Arboretum Azaleas need extensive pruning to tame their growth and remove invasive plant species. Your gift will support labor and material costs to help bring these beauties back to their former glory.
    • Estimated cost: $1,000

Every donation will directly contribute to reviving the garden, supporting local nurseries and the horticultural industry, creating a habitable environment for wildlife and making the world (and campus) a better place!

“The Founders Garden is truly the crown jewel of campus. We can’t take it for granted and we need to do everything we can to support it.”
