Ecology students who work under the mentorship of Dr. Jeb Byers have the opportunity to spend the summer collecting data in the field and in the lab, sharing their findings with scientific and local communities.
Their work explores questions such as: Is black gill disease contributing to shrimp declines? How is a red seaweed invasion transforming Georgia’s estuaries? What factors drive hotspots of oyster disease in Georgia?
Through the lab’s process of immersion, students learn valuable skills in experimental design, molecular techniques, statistics, hypothesis testing, inference and deductive reasoning. They also gain many practical, transferable skills like teamwork, dedication, attention to detail, time management and driving a boat!
To continue their work this year, the Byers Lab needs your help to bridge financial gaps that students encounter during the summer months. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to fully fund a student for the eight-week 2022 summer term, including room, board, travel, research supplies and a small stipend.
If you are interested in sponsoring a student, a gift of any amount will help us reach our goal. You’ll have the option to receive pictures and updates from students in the field or be our guest for an on-site field visit!
