We are experiencing unprecedented times. COVID-19 has had an impact on every community across the country, and the magnitude of the human and economic repercussions continue to grow. The School of Social Work is also bearing the painful effects of this pandemic and its subsequent financial hardships. We are facing shortages in state and federal funding. Due to changing federal government priorities, we have lost scholarship money allocated for a vulnerable segment of our student population that heavily relied on these federal funds. As you know, the cost of graduate school is high. These high costs can deter students from pursuing a degree in this field. This is especially true for historically underrepresented students, including racial and ethnic minorities, students whose families are deemed low-income, and first-generation students. These students are oftentimes more at-risk than others of not completing their degree because they lack the financial means to pay for tuition. During the 2019-2020 academic year, 37% of our student body self-identified as being African American, Latin, or Asian American, while 62% met the criteria for being economically disadvantaged.

Now more than ever, we need to come together. We are writing you because we are raising money for the 30-day Countdown to Classes scholarship drive. This money will go to specialization year students who were previous recipients of the Federal Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students and will be used to help defray the cost of tuition for students in the final year of their program of study. Our students are committed to making the world a better place, and at the School of Social Work, we are preparing them to do just that. As future social workers, these students are passionate about finding solutions for persistent and emerging social problems and promoting social justice. Pursuing their dreams and serving the community should remain their priority and focus, but many of them are instead managing significant student loans, trying to find part-time jobs, and simply trying to make ends meet. We ask you to commit to keeping alive their dream of becoming an advanced social work practitioner.

Student Testimonial: “In choosing to return to school and pursue a master in social work as a single parent, I was fully aware that I did not have much financial margin. During my last semester, several unexpected expenses occurred, including a medical bill and the breakdown of the family car. Support from the School of Social Work covered the cost of the repairs, and enabled me to continue to focus on being a student and parent.” –Tyler, MSW graduate who is now practicing in Atlanta

“Support from the School of Social Work changed my life. It allowed me to continue my MSW program and graduate on time. Now, thanks to the financial support from the School, I am a practicing MSW, working with foster youth and their families.” – Brandon, MSW graduate

Join us in making a gift. All the money received from gifts goes directly to supporting our recipients of the scholarship. Every donation, of any amount, helps our students realize their dream of obtaining a social work graduate degree. Help actualize our students’ aspiration by transforming your passion into purpose and words into action. Rise to the occasion by helping us meet our goal of 75 gifts in 30 days. We are so grateful that you have taken the time to consider donating to our cause. We look forward to hearing from you—our students are counting on your support! #CommitToFutureSWers
