Thanks to an amazing outpouring of support from the UGA and Athens area community, on April 23 we reached Campus Kitchen’s short term goal of $12,500 in support to continue providing meals into July.  Thank you!  Now, we’d like to expand our capacity to serve even more local seniors and their families. Raising a total of $37,500 will allow Campus Kitchen to serve as many as 30% more people in our community and continue providing meals through at least September 2020.

During a typical week, hundreds of UGA students volunteer with Campus Kitchen at UGA to serve some of the most vulnerable here in the Athens community. Campus Kitchen is a hunger relief program in the Office of Service Learning that recovers food that would have otherwise gone to waste and provides meals to older Athens residents, most of them grandparents raising grandchildren. With students no longer on campus due to Covid-19, the food security of these families was threatened.

Faced with this challenge, UGA employees and the greater Athens community members rose to the occasion—harvesting produce at the campus farm, cooking, delivering meals, and giving to this important effort in this extraordinary time.  Fewer than 10 UGA employees now run the program, following protocols for food safety and social distancing. They can’t hand off tools when harvesting the fresh vegetables, for example. No more than 10 people at a time can be in the kitchen preparing meals, following restrictions set by Gov. Brian Kemp. This collective effort even allowed Campus Kitchen to serve  Athens’ healthcare workers during the first weeks of the pandemic.

Together, we’re strengthening our Athens area community, even through these difficult times.
