Every year UGA’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium serves over 6,000 students through onsite marine science programs, and we love teaching them! This year, however, there is a real possibility that many schools will not be able to able to visit the aquarium because of budget cuts. Because of Covid-19, students will miss out on meaningful and memorable experiential learning that helps them to become better scientists and coastal stewards. Teachers will also miss out on classroom enrichment activities and professional development.

Rather than allow a whole year of third grade students to move on to fourth grade without these experiences, we have developed a strategy to meet the needs of our schools when it is safe to do so. We would like to take the CrabEcology outreach program to every third-grader in the public school system in Savannah!

That’s 37 schools, 185 classrooms, 370 teachers and 4,625 students!

Arriving in full crab costume with live crabs and other teaching props,we’ll guide students through activities that teach important aspects of life and earth science including coastal habitats, sand and mud studies, animal adaptations and Georgia’s blue crab fishery. The students will also receive a hand lens to continue their exploration after the class, and teachers will be connected to further resources online to share with their teaching colleagues.

Funds available to schools for field trips are limited, so many of these students have not been able to visit the aquarium before. We are excited to offer them this opportunity.

In these unique times, would you be part of helping us provide these hands-on, minds-on activities to area third graders? The total cost is $26,825. A gift of $145 would sponsor one classroom of third grade children, a gift of $725 would sponsor an entire school, and a gift of any amount will be an investment in our children and the Georgia coast!
