The social media sites AthensGaWeather and North Georgia Weather Authority have provided timely weather information for tens of thousands of followers across the state of Georgia for over a decade.  These sites were incorporated into the UGA Atmospheric Sciences Program curriculum in 2018 to give UGA students real-world experience in science communication.

We are seeking funding for a commercial weather graphics system.

A commercial weather graphics system would provide our students with hands on experience that is often required for them to obtain broadcast meteorology jobs after graduation. Plus, this system would give us the ability to track the timing of when storms (like tornadoes) will arrive in each town, identify areas of wind rotation that may be a tornado, or zoom into a street-level view so that specific road names and neighborhoods at risk can be called out.

Currently, our students are creating our video graphics in PowerPoint, not with the professional hardware and software used at commercial TV stations and bigger atmospheric sciences programs.
