Environmental Health Research Saves Lives

Help the Lipp Lab raise $4,000 to complete their public service mission!

Even if it means handling wastewater daily, the Lipp Lab, housed within the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at UGA’s College of Public Health, is dedicated to keeping the Athens community informed of local COVID-19 spread.

By measuring concentrations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in sewage samples collected from local county water treatment plants, Dr. Erin Lipp, and her lab can track how local COVID-19 cases ebb and flow in real-time and often more accurately than official case counts, which rely on reporting positive tests.

The Lipp Lab has applied for additional funding in the fall but will need to continue surveilling Athens-Clarke County wastewater for the SARS-CoV-2 virus continuously to complete our research. Give today to help us add more weeks of surveillance!

It costs $967 for a week of SARS CoV 2 analysis at one plant. This includes:

  • $225 to pay a student worker to work 15 hours processing and analyzing

  • $202 for general supplies such as pipette tips, collection jars, storage tubes, boxes, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • $184 for kits and materials to extract RNA from samples

  • $356 for materials, reagents, and standards for detection and quantification using RT-qPCR for two gene targets
