Help Clarke County Students Watch the Solar Eclipse

About the Project

On Aug. 21, Clarke County will be in near-total darkness during a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse—and we are helping local students watch how it happens.

This project will raise over $5,000 to help fund the purchase of special solar eclipse glasses for 15,000 students in the Clarke County School District, plus glasses for an additional 2,000 students in Title I schools around Clarke County and UGA students and faculty who work in these schools.

A total eclipse of the sun is a fascinating scientific event—the day turns into an eerie twilight and there seems to be a hole in the sky where the moon covers the sun. It is literally the difference between night and day!

But because Athens will see an almost total eclipse—99 percent—it’s important to watch this phenomenon safely. That’s why we need eclipse glasses, which will allow students to safely look at the sun and view the partial eclipse before and after the near-total eclipse event.

Why This Project Matters

Your donation will help purchase special eclipse glasses for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade, allowing them to safely view this once-in-a-lifetime near-total solar eclipse as it moves over Athens.

 

Funding Details

$4,500 will purchase 15,000 solar eclipse glasses for CCSD students, teachers, and helpers.

An additional $750 will provide 2,500 solar eclipse glasses for surrounding elementary and secondary schools requiring financial assistance.
