About the Project

It worked so well, we’ll do it again … for a second time, members of Grady College’s Advanced Photojournalism course will be charged with showing what the Georgia National Fair means to thegaNatlFair logo2015 state of Georgia during a 16-hour long workshop in October. Students will be on the fairgrounds from before the gates open until the closing fireworks, going beyond funnel cakes and carnival rides, looking for moments that share the experiences of the attendees.

The students will make images for an hour or two before heading across the street to the Perry Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for a critique session with one of our professional mentors. The knowledge they gain from that session will be put right back to use when they return to the fair, a cycle to be repeated throughout the day.

The workshop will partner again with the Macon Telegraph, which last year published more than 250 photographs made by UGA students.

Why the Project Matters

This project gives students first hand, real world experience covering a major event, the opportunity to have their work critiqued by professional mentors and have their work published by the Macon Telegraph.

Due to the length of the day and the distance from Athens, this funding will be used to house the students and professionals in area hotels as well as to cover some of their expenses while on the road. The goal is to have no financial barriers for the students – we want every one of them to concentrate on making images and growing as visual storytellers, not worrying about the cost of the weekend.
