This garden is cherished by students, faculty, alums, garden lovers, history buffs and wildlife alike! It serves as a classroom, tailgating venue, celebratory space for graduations and weddings, habitat for critters, and respite in times of strife. Its mission as a living laboratory is to educate students about maintaining historic structures, and the use of plant materials in the design of outdoor spaces. As time goes by, plants have a lifecycle – birth, growth, death; similarly historic buildings and landscapes need constant maintenance. And like a well-loved teddy bear, the Founders Memorial Garden and its historic buildings and landscapes are showing their age and hence need sustained maintenance and in some cases rejuvenation.
As a public garden, there are no entrance fees to cover expenses. There is no funding outside the College of Environment and Design covering the salary of the garden curator, and no endowment for small or large repairs. Users enjoy its benefits but don’t realize the cost of physical impacts from daily wear and tear. The funding to care for the garden comes 100% from private donations like yours.
With your gift we’ll be able to:
- Install pollinator plants
- Add more colorful plantings to the Serpentine Garden
- Enhance the edge plantings to replace dying bamboo
- Rejuvenate the Boxwood garden (650 + plants )
- Increase security/safety on site (3 cameras, server hub, communications)
- Sustain the tree infrastructure through preventative maintenance
- Replace walkways made of street cobbles with flagstone as originally designed
